Topeka, Kan., October 29, 2009 – Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Charles Schollenberger, 57, of Prairie Village, Kan., received a unanimous endorsement of his candidacy today from the Washburn Law Democrats at Washburn University School of Law. 

Washburn Law Democrats, lead by President Amanda Haas, is an officially chartered student organization at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kan.  The Washburn Law Democrats were founded in spring of 2008 by Ryan Eagleson and Jeffrey Dazey of the Washburn Law class of 2010.  The purpose of the organization is to develop relationships between law students and Democratic politicians and to increase involvement in government and public affairs.

Though limited by their constitution to endorsing unopposed Democratic candidates, the endorsement resolution praised Mr. Schollenberger’s careful decision to announce his candidacy after a lengthy exploratory campaign.  The Washburn Law Democrats also noted the importance of announcing his candidacy early in the election cycle and how this decision will help build grass roots support for Mr. Schollenberger and the Kansas Democratic party.

Washburn University School of Law was founded in 1903.  It is located in Topeka, Kan., the state capital, and has graduated some of the state’s finest attorneys. In addition to the Juris Doctorate, the Law School and University offer dual Masters degrees in business administration and social work. Washburn University School of Law is accredited by the American Bar Association.

Whereas – Current U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, R-Kan., has announced that he will not seek another term, and that he will instead seek election has Kansas’ governor; and

Whereas – on October 8, 2009, Democrat Charles Schollenberger responsibly announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat left open by Sen. Brownback’s, after conducting a careful and lengthy exploratory campaign; and

Whereas – Mr. Schollenberger’s advanced decision to announce his candidacy gives Mr. Schollenberger, and the Kansas Democratic Party, an exceptional opportunity to build grassroots support; and

Whereas – no other Democratic candidate has yet announced their candidacy for this important position, despite knowing that U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback will not seek relection; and

Whereas – Mr. Schollenberger’s mainstream progressive ideology makes him a viable candidate for the U.S. Senate in Kansas; and

Whereas – Mr. Schollenberger’s decision to give his first major policy speech at Washburn University School of Law as a guest of the Washburn Law Democrats represented a tremendous boost to the credibility and profile of this young organization; and

Whereas – Supporting Kansas Democratic candidates for elected office  is an essential part of this organization’s mission, purpose and goals;

The Executive Committee of the Washburn Law Democrats Hereby ENDORSES Charles Schollenberger as the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate Seat now held by U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback.
